The Process Of Giclée

The Giclée Process and Our Commitment to Quality

What is a Giclée?  The French word "Giclée" (pronounced zhee-klay) refers to the latest and most sophisticated printing technology.  Unlike most modern mass production printing processes, which are designed to enable large quantities to be produced, giclées are produced one at a time using a custom process directly involving the person doing the printing.

The Giclée process offers better color accuracy, and provides for a richness of detail and depth in a resulting print and is far superior in its results to lithography and most other methods of production.  Lithographs are made up of tiny dots of four individual color inks and if examined under a magnifying glass looks like something in your newspaper.  Giclées not only incorporate more colors (ours use 8 - 12 different color inks) but they are printed at such high resolutions that effectively there are no dots in a Giclée print, rather they are a continuous and smooth mass of vibrant and rich colors.

The Giclée process is especially suited to fine art production as it is true to the original and if printed on canvas has the look and feel of an original oil painting.  Giclée images are now frequently seen in art galleries and museums.

                                       Our Process

Not all Giclées are the same.  We believe that it is important that you purchase your prints from a company focused on strict guidelines to ensure the finest quality results.  We produce all of our own Giclées as we want to ensure the highest quality standards and to ensure that the materials we use for our customers produce the best quality images.  We are able to offer better color accuracy by focusing on producing on better and deeper blacks and making sure that our color saturations and gradations meet expectations.  Our focus on limited editions allows us to deliver the highest quality possible and to ensure that your print will maintain its value over the years to come.

We only use the highest quality archival inks on acid free fine art paper and canvas, or on our photographic papers. All of our optional mattes and backing sheets are also acid-free.  We believe that by using the highest quality materials and media, we are offering our customers the highest quality of prints today.

Finally, we coat all of our art paper and canvas Giclée images with a layer of UV protective glaze, which helps to ensure that our images will not fade and which is anti-scratch and resistant to soiling or damage by water.  The canvases can be mounted on stretch frames and will not require any additional framing or glass protection.  As a result, our Giclées are estimated to last between 70 and 130 years without any noticeable fading.
